Technical Guidelines: Overview

All producers of video and audio content for WSU on iTunes U  should read this page before they begin to produce and compress their audio and video materials for upload.

Materials posted on WSU on iTunes U are available for the entire world to download and play. It is very important that producers keep an eye on content, duration and quality. You'll get the best quality by starting with good recording techniques. Proper microphones are needed for good audio recording. Video recording is helped by good lighting and getting close to your subject. Spend some time learning some video recording techniques. Bad recordings can rarely be fixed; the old saying "garbage in, garbage out" applies here.

WSU on iTunes U functions as a content management and delivery platform for a compressed output version of an original media source.  At this time, compressed formats for iTunes U are mostly variations of MPEG (.m4a or .mp3 for audio; .mp4, .m4v and .mov for video). WSU on iTunes U is a distribution service only, not a storage space for uncompressed original media. The Contributor is responsible for archiving the uncompressed source elsewhere. 

WSU on iTunes U accepts all formats described by Apple.

File size:  Size limit for each file uploaded is 500 MB.

For AAC audio files, Apple recommends the following specifications: For iPod-optimized video files, Apple recommends the following specifications:
Audio Format: Baseline Low-Complexity Profile with AAC-LC (Music)
Data Rate: Up to 160 Kbps
Channels: Stereo in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov format
Output Sample Rate: 48 kHz
Encoding Quality: Better
Video Format: MPEG-4 with H.264 compression using appropriate file extensions (.mp4, .m4v, .mov).
Data Rate: Up to 1.5 Mbps
Image Size: 640 x 480 pixels
Frame Rate: 30 frames per second
Key Frame: Every 24 frames

There is no duration limit provided you stay within the proper filesize and use the proper formats. However, each Contributor should be very familiar with all accepted formats prior to submitting content.
